SmartScapes is the concept underlying the landscape division at Riverland Nursery.  Much more than attractive landscape planning and installation, SmartScapes is a practical application of reducing maintenance and water usage by the careful planning and selection of plant material.

We live in an environment with limited amounts of usable water. Perhaps even more critical is the vulnerability of clean and usable groundwater to pollution from fertilizer and pesticide runoff. The frequency and duration of harmful algae bloom characterized as red tide is believed to be a direct consequence of runoff.

The majority of all water used in SW Florida is by irrigation most of which is for residential applications. SmartScapes utilizes plant material needing low-water, fertilizer and pesticide inputs to achieve a truly environmentally “friendly” and successful landscape outcome.

Beauty is also an important consideration in any SmartScapes project. The use of unique hardscapes, water features and unique plant specimens leads to a stunning but practical garden, often attracting various wildlife!
