Florida Temperate Zones
One of the most common questions asked by our customers is about what kind of fertilizer to use, how to keep their plants healthy when they are away during the summer, and the benefits of using organic vs. inorganic fertilizers. This is a subject that has overwhelming amounts of information available, much of it contradictory.
Plant nutrition is vital to obtain optimal plant growth. The soil in Southwest Florida is unique with high soil temperatures and heavy rainfall in the summer months. Fertilizers not specifically formulated for our climate and soil may break down quickly, doing little good for plants and our environment. Our normally sandy soils are generally alkaline and lack necessary nutrients. Regular fertilizer applications are essential.
Sure-Gro. We use and recommend several products from Sure-gro, a leader in the creation of top-quality, control-release fertilizers specifically formulated for our unique climate and soil conditions. They market their products only to nurseries from central to south Florida. Their 8-2-12 palm fertilizer is a technology-leader developed in conjunction with a world-renown palm scientist from the U of FL. The best part, is that it and can be used on all plants!
Peggy Green. This innovative Florida company is a leader in developing environmentally friendly fertilizers. They are well-known for their excellent organic Tomato and Vegetable fertilizers, and recently introduced a much-needed 90 day control-release fertilizer for turfgrasses in Florida.
