Maintaining Plants Should be a Pleasure not a Punishment
Saturday, Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 10 a.m. FREE
Instructor: Jeff Israel, FNGLA Certified Horticultural Professional
Experienced gardeners know that a pruning job should not be judged by how the plant looks when finished pruning but by how the plant looks a year later.
Landscape maintenance in Florida can be a twelve months a year endeavor and many gardeners are interested in learning the pruning methods that will give maximum results with minimal effort. Jeff will demonstrate the how and when of proper pruning and trimming techniques in order to maintain healthy trees and shrubs. Pruning correctly opens up plants to let in more light and air and helps reduce the build-up of woody stems, dead wood and disease. Jeff will also discuss appropriate plant nutrition and fertilization schedules for optimizing blooms and growth.

Instructor: Mayer Berg, Riverland Owner
One of the many perks of Florida living is being able to pick delicious and nutritional fruit off our own backyard citrus trees. Unfortunately, Florida citrus growers are experiencing several citrus problems such as citrus greening (HLB) and canker. Many of our customers come to the nursery with curled and blotchy leaves or deformed and bitter fruit and are seeking a cure for their declining citrus trees.
Citrus greening continues to be a widespread problem in Florida and it is often the explanation for symptoms of bitter fruit, discolored leaves, mottled and/or irregular shaped fruit and general decline of the tree.
Mayer will discuss how homeowners can control the psyllid insect infestation that spreads citrus greening. He will review what the commercial growers are doing to achieve and maintain significant levels of citrus production and how homeowners can replicate their success.
Selecting Beautiful Trees for SW Florida
Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 10 a.m.
Instructor: Mayer Berg, Riverland Nursery owner
"The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is today." Chinese Proverb
Trees are the bones of the landscape, providing a framework for the overall landscape design. A specific specimen and its placement often will determine what other plants are used in the landscape. Many customers visit the nursery in search of the "perfect" tree to fit their needs. Trees are selected on the basis of many qualifying factors, such as: providing privacy, shade, beautiful flowers, fragrance, berries and shelter for wildlife, or fruit for the homeowner. Mayer will discuss and demonstrate a variety of beautiful and hardy trees well-suited to SW Florida. These will include many unique shade, specimen and ornamental trees that may not be commonly seen in landscapes.
